Empowering Rakai’s Disabled Community
Overcoming Barriers for Rakai’s Disabled
People with disabilities in Rakai District frequently encounter significant societal and
physical barriers limiting their potential. Access to essential healthcare, tailored
education, and sustainable livelihood opportunities can be severely restricted. Furthermore,
acquiring necessary assistive devices, such as wheelchairs, crutches, or hearing aids, often
presents an insurmountable financial and logistical challenge for many families.
Beyond the physical and resource limitations, persistent social stigma and misconceptions
surrounding disability can lead to profound isolation and exclusion from vital community
life. This lack of inclusion not only hinders personal development and economic
participation but also deeply affects mental and emotional well-being, denying individuals
their fundamental right to belong and be treated with dignity.
Our February 2026 field visit to Kifamba documented these barriers directly. People with
disabilities in the area face significant physical and financial obstacles accessing wheelchairs,
crutches, and hearing aids. Many also lack caregivers a challenge compounded by deep social isolation.
The visit identified individuals in urgent need of assistive devices and medical support, and work is
underway to connect them with available government grants from Uganda's Ministry of Gender, Labour and
Social Development.
