Supporting Elders & People with Disabilities Since 2016
The Lusi Namatovu Foundation was born from a deeply personal experience in 2016, when Samuel Ssebandeke Kayanja, our Founder and CEO, visited from the UK and discovered his elderly Aunt Christina Namazzi in a dire state due to neglect by family members. Heartbroken, he realized that many other elders in Rakai District faced similar struggles lacking food, shelter, and care, often forced to beg from neighbors due to poverty and the absence of government assistance for retirees in many African countries, unless they worked for the government. This encounter ignited Samuel’s determination to fight hunger and empower Rakai’s vulnerable elderly with love and support.
Inspired by this calling, Samuel formally established the Lusi Namatovu Foundation in 2016 and registered it as a Community Based Organisation (CBO) in 2017, naming it in loving memory of his late mother, Lusi Namatovu, to honor her legacy of care and family values. Initially, our mission focused on supporting Rakai’s neglected elders, providing essentials like rice, sugar, clothing, shelter, and medical care to ensure they could live longer in an environment where they are not seen as burdens. A dedicated team, led by our Executive Director, worked tirelessly to meet their daily needs, offering the dignity and companionship that so many senior citizens desperately needed.
As our work grew, we saw that people with disabilities in Rakai faced similar challenges of neglect, poverty, and isolation, often compounded by additional needs as they aged. In 2024, we expanded our mission to include disability support, offering assistive devices, healthcare, and advocacy to ensure they too can live with dignity and feel loved. Today, the Lusi Namatovu Foundation proudly serves both elderly individuals and people with disabilities, working hand in hand with the government and community to create a more supportive and equitable Rakai, where every vulnerable person has the opportunity to thrive in an environment of care and respect.
"Every person deserves dignity and care, especially in their most vulnerable moments. This belief drives everything we do in Rakai."
